Retraining a fearful dog is a long, drawn-out process, and takes place in a number of steps. At first, it's important to show the dog that he doesn't need to fear with you. If you give him a command, you must insist that he obey it. Once your dog has learned that he can trust you, you can then move on to the next step. In any case, severe timidity in a dog should be handled by a behavioral specialist.
