2008-02-05 - Dog growls at me
Sometimes when I feed my dog, he growls at me. What does this mean?
Dogs instinctively protect their food dishes and will growl if someone tries to come near. But for most of us, this is unwanted behaviour (for example, if a clueless child walks by too closely). I recommend, therefore, reaching for your dog's dish from a young age. If the dog is upset by this and growls, take the dish away from him, and after a few seconds, offer him some food only from your hand so that he can get used to the fact that you don't want to take his food - on the contrary - you're the one who feeds him, but he needs to respect that sometimes you give him something, and sometimes you take....
