The Somali belongs to the group of shorthair cats with semi-long coat. Its body is medium long, firm, lithe and muscular. It must not be too large or coarse, and definitely not cobby. The legs are long and slender, but elegant. They have small dainty paws. The head, placed on a graceful neck, is wedge shaped, of medium proportions, with broad forehead and soft, graceful contours. The nose is medium long - in profile it shows a gentle curve. The chin is strong and well shaped. The muzzle must not be sharply pointed. A shallow indentation in profile is desirable, but a pinch is a fault. Ears are relatively large, broad at the base. At the tips they are slightly rounded, with a thumbprint. The tufts of hair at the tips are desirable and longer tufts of hair should grow from the inside of the ear. Ears are attentively pricked. Eyes are large, almond shaped, brilliant and expressive - amber, green or yellow. The colour must be clear and intense. They are outlined with the colour of ticking. The tail is long, broad at the base and tapering to the tip; it should be well furnished. The coat is semi-long, except on the shoulders, where it can be little shorter. The texture is very soft to touch, extremely fine and very dense; the denser, the better. Preference is given to cats with a well-developed frill and breeches. The development of the ticking is slow - the coat is not fully developed until the age of two years.
