The German Rex belongs to the group of shorthaired cats. It is a medium-sized cat. The head is rounded with good width between the ears. The cheeks are well developed. The nose has a slight indentation at the base. The chin is strong. Whiskers are shorter and curly. Ears are of medium size, wide at the base, slightly rounded at the tips. The outside is well covered with fine hair, the inside is slightly covered. The eyes are medium large and well-opened, set at a good distance from the nose, at the outer rather than the inner edge of the nose outline. They are brilliant, harmonizing with the coat colour. The body is of medium length, strong and muscular, but not massive or coarse looking. In profile the chest is strong and rounded. The back is straight from the shoulders to the rump. Legs are of medium length and rather fine. Paws are distinctive and round. The tail is of medium length, wide at the base, tapering a rounded tip. It is well covered with fur. The coat is very short and velvety, soft and very silky. The density varies from thin, soft hairs to a thick uppercoat. It is curly or wavy, without guard hairs. All colour varieties and patterns are recognized, including combinations with white. Any amount of white is permitted.
