The Egyptian Mau, a silver, black spotted cat, belongs to the group of shorthaired cats with agouti factor (spotted pattern). It is a medium-sized cat, and it gives the impression of active, beautifully coloured animal. The head has a slightly rounded, semi-long wedge shape, without flat planes. The entire length of the nose should be even in width when viewed from the front. The ears are medium to large, broad at the base, alert and moderately pointed. The inside is a delicate, almost transparent shell pink. The hair on the ears is short and close lying. Ears may be tufted. Eyes are large and almond in shape. They have an alert, attentive expression. Their colour is light gooseberry green. An amber cast is acceptable only in young adults until they reach puberty (up to 1 ? years). The body is of medium length, graceful, with well developed muscles. A loose skin flap extends from the flanks to the knees of the hind legs. The overall balance of proportions is more preferable than the size of cat alone. The hind legs are relatively longer, giving the appearance of being on tiptoe when standing upright. Paws are narrow, graceful, slightly oval, almost round in shape. The coat is short and dense, with a silky sheen. It must be noticeably spotted. The spots of varying size and shape are randomly scattered over the body, but they must always be clearly and distinctly divided with a background colour. The spotted pattern does not need to be unified on both sides of the trunk. On the chest there are one or more broken necklaces, the shoulder markings are a transition between stripes and spots. Ideally, along the spine there are elongated spots. The tail is distinctively ringed and ended with a one-coloured tip. FIFe recognizes three colour varieties: bronze (MAU n 24), black silver spotted (MAU ns 24) and black smoke (MAU ns).
