A provisional standard of the Bohemia Rex cat was set according to external characteristics of the Persian cat. The head is round and massive, with a very wide skull. The forehead is rounded, cheeks are full. The nose is short, wide, with a noticeable stop, it is placed between the eyes. Ears are small, rounded and widely set. The colours of their big, round and open eyes correspond to the colour varieties of Persian cats. The body must be stout and well muscled, set on low, short, strong legs. The tail is short and richly furred. The coat is the most typical attribute of the Bohemia Rex. It is long, heavy and, except the short fur on the face and ears, it is noticeably curly. On the frill, shirtfront, flanks, belly and knickerbockers, the coat forms spindle-shaped or whorled ringlets or tiny locks. The fur on the shoulder blades, back and tail is not so distinctly curled. Hairs on the limbs are curled in ringlets in the shapes of the letters J, U or S, thus the fur resembles a rich plush. The tactile hairs are also wavy. The colour is identical to the varieties of Persian cats. Recently, the Bohemia Rex breed was registered in the Czech book of breeds in fifteen colour varieties. The prevailing colours are red, cream, black- and blue-tortie. Bohemia Rex breeders have faced several difficulties. The most serious problem is reduced fertility as well as the lack of interest of a wider sphere of breeders to breed them. Recently, however, sufficient numbers of Bohemia Rex cats have been bred to ask the international organization of cat breeders FIFe to legitimatise this original Czech breed.
